LAS VEGAS, NV (AP) – The state Bureau of Consumer Protection and NV Energy are proposing a compromise on a smart meter opt-out program.
The Las Vegas Review Journal reports the utility filed documents Monday with the Public Utilities Commission of Nevada. The proposed agreement would allow analog meters instead of digital meters, and would lower the up-front fee for customers opting out.
NV Energy has installed about 1.3 million smart meters, which transmit data directly to the utility. But some customers have criticized the program, saying the meters may pose health hazards or invade privacy.
The commission originally agreed to a one-time opt-out fee of $108 for northern Nevada customers or $99 for southern Nevada customers, and recurring monthly charges of about $8.
Monday’s proposal recommends an up-front charge as low as $53.
