History of County's Past in Today's Centennial Edition
The Evening News today proudly presents its Centennial Edition, marking
the 100th anniversary of Washington's territorial status.
Today's issue contains 56 pages, nearly all devoted to telling the
history of Clallam County in news and pictures.
Practically all of the stories covering Port Angeles and Clallam
County history were written and researched by the regular editorial
staff of the Evening News.
Jack Henson wrote the stories on the Puget Sound Co-Operative Colony,
early explorations of the area, hunting and fishing, early shipping,
Indians and their customs, shingle mills, the logging industry, the
Weir-Troy families, city and county post offices, and doctors and
hospitals. In addition, he drew on his own experiences and newspaper
career spanning most of the city's history to contribute dozens of
shorter stories and little 'fillers' of historical interest.
Charles Kelm wrote the stories on the county highway system, the
Olympic Highway, the city's four major industries (Rayonier, Fibreboard,
Crown Zellerbach and Peninsula Plywood), county's settlement, and
labor unions.
Frances Gallagher wrote the histories of city government, Coast Guard
Cutters, lifeboat stations, and the air base; farming, and city and
farm women's organizational histories.
Earl Clark wrote the stories of railroading in the county, schools,
Olympic National Park, newspapers, resorts and the town of Forks.
J Lawrence Steven of the Evening News Press staff drew the full page
illustration for the special section covers.
A few individuals were of notable help to the staff in the big job
of research which has gone into this edition, notably Miss Jessie
Ayres on the county's history, Thomas S Dickinson and Emerson Lawrence
on post offices, and Gunnar Fagerlund on the national park. The staff
also drew heavily on the April 19, 1941 Progress Edition of the Evening
News which was largely complied by Clayton Hay, now with the Seattle
Times; and the Lauridsen and Smith book, "The Story of Port Angeles";
and James McCurdy's "by Juan de Fuca's Strait".....and the
Clallam County Historical Society.
