Port Angeles leaders will have to depend on another temporary appointment to keep the city’s Planning Commission in operation, now that another commissioner has resigned.

Commissioner Fred Norton resigned his seat this week, citing opposition to the city council’s controversial re-organization plan approved last month. Under that plan, the city is placing supervision of the Department of Community Development under the city’s economic development director. The idea came under attack last month by local business leaders and members of the planning commission, who are concerned how the re-organization will effect the city’s ability to objectively consider proposed projects and developments.

Approval of the plan last month caused several of the Planning Commissioners to resign and Norton followed suit this week.

It was just last week that the city council gave City Manager Mike Quinn the authority to appoint Jim Hulett as an interim commissioner so the panel could have a quorum and be able to conduct business. It’s expected Quinn will name another former planning commissioner, Cindy Souders to help out, and keep the panel with enough members to conduct business.
