SEATBELT LAW TARGETED FOR REPEAL


The Washington Seatbelt Coalition has filed an Initiative that would repeal the recent change in the Washington State seatbelt law that authorizes police officers to stop and cite ADULT motorists for not wearing a seatbelt.

If the voters pass this initiative at the Nov 2003 election once again police officers will NOT be able to stop and cite an ADULT motorist for a seat belt violation UNLESS stopped for some other offense.

Supporters have until July 2003 to collect 197,734 valid signatures to place it on the November Ballot.

Since the June 13, 2002, change in the seatbelt law took affect Official Government signs have sprung up across the state proclaiming "CLICK IT OR TICKET $86.00 FINE," the website of supporters attempting to change the
seat belt law is www.clickitstickit.com. And supporters now proclaim "86 THE SEATBELT LAW."

Currently the group has coordinators in Thurston, Lewis, Pierce, Kitsap, King, Whatcom, Kittitas, Yakima, Klickitat and Spokane Counties. More volunteers are needed to insure a spot on the ballot.
