Group Eliminates Individual Applicants for Team by Lois Krafsky-Perry September 10, 1997 Sequim, WA - Local residents and Dungeness riverbed owners Jack Sallee and Robert Kavanaugh of Sequim objected to the elimination of their names for consideration on the Dungeness River Management Team (DRMT) at the September 10, 1997 meeting of the Team at the S’Klallam Tribal Center in Blyn. “I would like to know, when I represent ten percent of the real estate lacing the river and about the only farmer with about 550 acres on this river, is turned down to not give the farmers any representation along the river...I would like to see in writing from each one of you why I was turned down,” Sallee requested. The Sequim farmer also represented Dr. J.A. Severson. Combined, the two citizens own two miles of frontage on the Dungeness River. Team member Steve Tharinger, representing the East End Planning Commission, objected to Sallee’s request and suggested that he lobby and apply under a group rather than individually, which brought further objections from Sallee as he questioned Tharinger about his interests on the Team. After hearing that the DRMT was considering representatives from five local organizations while omitting four individual applicants, Kavanaugh, whose river property was flooded recently with the complete destruction of the Haller Dike, expressed his frustration at not being considered for Team representation. Ed Chadd of Joyce and Shiwa Leonard, formerly of Colorado, submitted applications to the DRMT for membership. The five groups under consideration are North Olympic Land Trust, Dungeness
Valley Association, Protect the Peninsula’s Future, Dungeness Meadows
Homeowners Association, and Dungeness River Mineral Resource. Dungeness
Rural Village was discussed and placed aside for the time being because
of the desire for more information about the group. The citizens represent
longtime landowners on the lower Dungeness River near the Corps Dike.
